BOOK HARNESS MUSLIN

  • 1 Book Harness Muslin

A brocade figured fabric of the Madras muslin character. The ground is plain weave and the figuring is produced from coarse weft in detached figures. The floating weft from figure to figure is cropped off. Qualities vary from 48 X 40 to 60 X 56 ground weave. The weft is two fine picks ground, two coarse picks figure. Warp from 50's to 60's. Cord checks are produced by using thick cords in warp as well as weft, and these cords are floated as required, and after weaving, the floats cropped off. The illustration is of a cloth which is rather expensive, owing to the large amount of weft that is wasted

  • 2 Thread Harness Muslin

Brocade cloth in which every thread in the warp is controlled by the jacquard. Very similar to book harness muslin, but finer in construction and of better quality. The figuring is developed from coarse weft woven pick and pick with the ground. The floating weft is cut away. Many beautiful effects are produced by the combination of gauze stripes and plain stripes with figure. A typical example is made with 64 ends and 60 picks per inch, 64's warp, 52's weft, 10's figuring wefts.

  • 3 Madras

A very light-weight shirting fabric, plain weave, with narrow coloured warp stripes in either silk or mercerised cotton. Usually made from very good quality yarns, such as 60's warp and 60's weft, both Egyptian, and 2/120's mercerised stripes, with about 116 ends and 88 picks per inch, in widths 27-in. to 34-in. and 52-in. Many cloths are sold as " Madras," but the above-described is the only true one (see also Book Harness Muslin)
